Leviticus 19:28
I've had this idea ever since a youth minister/family friend saw my tattoos and told me to read Leviticus 19:28. I bet he thought it would change my life and I would regret all my sins, because I'm so religious.... Wrong. Instead I've found some humor in this, and it has since inspired a new tattoo.

ReplyDeleteYuletide greetings from Central PA!
ReplyDeleteI managed to stumble onto your blog today and thought I would say hi (OK, I remembered your website and followed the link).
I wanted to respond to the issue you address here. Whoever this youth minister was, I’m not sure he had all his facts straight, because it seems to me he took a verse out of context, one that was intended for a specific group of people at a specific time, and tried to apply it to everyone. I mean, look at the previous verse: "Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard." I doubt this guy was haranguing anyone who had ever shaved or gotten a haircut (well...at least, I hope not).
My point is, that verse is a poor place to begin if you want to understand what the Bible is all about. If you ask me (and it’s true, you didn't), the Bible is a plan for freedom from self and submission to God, which is the only hope any of us has got.
For a real understanding of the Bible, I have two suggestions. First, read it for yourself, not based on how its supporters or detractors have tried to twist it, but based on what it says. I've read it myself more than once, and lots of people manage to get it wrong. Second, have you ever heard of Mark Driscoll? He's a pastor at Mars Hill Church, which has a couple different locations in Seattle, and has a well-deserved reputation for telling it like it is. http://www.marshillchurch.org
I have to go read that now. You think it'll change my life?
